Department of Obstetric and Gynaecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology came into being since the establishment of Patan Hospital in 1982. In keeping with the mission and goals of PAHS, the department strives to provide quality health services to the people and to impart the culture of academic excellence and social responsibility to its graduates.

We currently have two working units in the department, Unit I and Unit II.
The major goals and activities of the Department are three-pronged: service, education, and research.

A. Health Services
  1. Out-patient services (OPD)

OPD services are provided in all working days (Sunday-Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) via general OPD (Antenatal clinic /Postnatal clinic/Family planning clinic/ Gynecology clinicand extended OPDs (Patan private clinic or PPC and Patan Private Practice or PPP). Specialty services in Feto- maternal medicine, High Risk pregnancies,Infertility, Oncology, Urogynecology and Laparoscopy are available. There are special OPD services for patients with High Risk Pregnancies ,Infertility and Gynaecological malignancies.In average,Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology caters OPD services to around 250 patients per day.

  1. In-patient services
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology  provides in-patient services through  beds (excluding cabin beds which are not specifically for Obstetrics and Gynecology only):

Specialty services available in various specialty units include:

  • Feto Maternal Services:
    Feto Maternal unit has been expanding its services in both invasive and non-invasive arena. Special OPD services are available on Friday from 9-4 pm. We have a special state of the art ultrasound machine specially dedicated for doing fetal scans. Non-invasive feto-maternal services include Pre-conception genetic counseling, prenatal testing, 1st trimester/ 2nd trimester screening, NuchalTransulency scan and Anomaly scan. Invasive services include Chorionic Villus Sampling , Amniocentesis, Amnioreduction ,Amnioinfusion.
  • Infertility Services:
    Infertility unit runs OPD on all working days and is involved in providing pre-conceptionalcounselling to infertile couple. The unit provides various diagnostic and therapeutic services like Semen Analysis, Hormonal Analysis, Evalution for diminished ovarian reserve, Hysterosalpingography, Saline Infusion Sonography, Hysteroscopy , Laparoscopy and Chromopertubation.
  • Gynecology Oncology Services
    Oncology unit has been providing various screening, diagnostic, therapeutic and prophylactic services along with out-patient and in-patient services for being/ malignant tumors on all working days. Screening for cervical cancer in reproductive age group by PAP smear, VIA (Visual inspection under acetic acid) , VILI( visual inspection under lugol iodine) and colposcopy is available on all working days. Diagnostics procedures includes cervical biopsy, endometrial biopsy, hysteroscopic guided endometrial biopsy, vulval biopsy and lymph node dissection. Therapeutic procedures include polypectomy, LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure), conization, Radical hysterectomy, staging laparotomy, cytoreductive and secondary/interval debulking surgeries. Besides that prophylactic services include genetic counseling, risk reduction salpingo -Oophorectomy and hysterectomy. Oncology unit has been providing proper care to outpatient with strict surveillance.
    • Minimally invasive and laparoscopic services

Under minimally invasive and laparoscopic services we provide diagnostic hysteroscopy, hysteroscopy guided copper T removal, endometrial biopsy , diagnostic laparoscopy and dye test, total laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic myomectomy, laparoscopic cystectomy and laparoscopic surgeries for ectopic pregnancy

  • High Risk Pregnancy services
    High Risk Pregnancy unit provides services on all working days. Antenatal check service with close monitoring is being provided on OPD basis. 18 beds are allocated for strict monitoring for high risk pregnancies. During labour and delivery continuous maternal and fetal monitoring services are provided. Besides that, cardiotocography ,epidural analgesia, vacuum / forceps delivery and emergency cesarean section by expertise are also available.
  • Uro-Gynecology services
    Uro-gynecology unit runs OPD on all working days and has beenproviding outpatient/inpatient services. Various services provided by uro gynecology unit include pessary insertion for prolapse, Anterior colporrhaphy, Posterior colpoperineorrahaphy, vaginal hysterectomy, sacrospinous fixation , Kelly’s plication , Fistula repair ( Latzko procedure , Partial colpocleisis).
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology services
    Besides all special services department of obstetrics and gynecology has been involved in patient as well day care services includingantenatal check up/ counselling, labour induction/ agumentation, deliveries ,marsupilization, suction /evacuation , Total abdominal hysterectomy, subtotal hysterectomy, , myomectomy , cystectomy, salpingo-oophorectomy, surgeries for ectopic pregnancy as well as medical management .
  • Family planning services
    Family planning unit has been providing services to couple who are motivated for family planning .Various services provided by family planning unit include family planning counseling, oral contraceptive pills, progesterone only pills, copper T insertion / removal , Jadelle insertion/ removal, Intrauterine contraceptive devices(IUCD) insertion/removal , Bilateral tubal ligation , interval tubal ligation and vasectomy.
  • Birthing centre
    Patan Hospital is currently the only hospital in the country with a dedicated birthing centre. Our trained nursing staffs provide counseling, yoga and exercise sessions to pregnant ladies for uncomplicated deliveries. Post delivery mothers are educated about exclusive breast feeding, proper techniques for breast feeding, care, nourishment and hygiene. At time of discharge birthing centre is providing Iron tablets as per government policies. All these services are cost effective and easily available.

B. Education
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is involved in medical training from undergraduate to postgraduate and subspecialty levels:

• Undergraduate: MBBS
• Post-graduate: The department runs MD Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program. Besides, it provides short-term rotational training to MD residents from other disciplines like MDGP.

C. Research
Several research activities are being carried out in the department by the residents and the faculties.
