Department of Psychiatry was established in 2011 A.D. in the form of regular psychiatric outpatient service. However, general practitioners, Nepalese, and expatriate psychiatrists provided mental health services even from the 1980s (once or twice a week). In 2013, the psychiatry ward was established with six beds. The psychology service was started in 2014 and postgraduate training was started in 2018.
The department provides clinical services in forms of outpatient and inpatient care, 24 hr emergency and consultation liaison services, psychology services, and neuromodulation treatments (rTMS and ECT). It also provides tele-consultation services along with 24-hour suicide helpline. Outpatient care is provided through Patan private clinic and general OPD. Specialized outpatient services such as addiction clinic, child and adolescent guidance clinic, and geriatric mental health and memory clinic, headache clinic are also being provided. Apart from aforementioned services mental health services through One-Stop Crisis Management Centre(OCMC)) to victims and perpetrators of gender-based violence is also provided.
he curricula of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students include dedicated community postings. The department has been working in capacity building of health professionals in collaboration with NHTC, NHRC, MOHP, and NGOs.
The faculties are involved in various research projects conducted at national and international levels.
